The World of Beatrix Potter

Old Laundry, Crag Brow, LA23 3BX • Daily 10am–5.30pm • £7.50, children £3.95 • 01539 488444, hop-skip-jump.com

You either like Beatrix Potter or you don’t, but it’s safe to say that the elaborate 3D story scenes, audiovisual “virtual walks”, themed tearoom and gift shop here at the interactive World of Beatrix Potter find more favour with children than the more formal Potter attractions at Hill Top and Hawkshead.

Blackwell

LA23 3JT, 1.5 miles south of Bowness, off A5074 • Daily 10.30am–5pm • £8.80, under-16s free • 01539 446139, blackwell.org.uk

Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott’s Blackwell was built in 1900 as a lakeside holiday home, and boasts a superbly restored Arts and Crafts interior. Lakeland motifs – trees, flowers, birds and berries – abound, while temporary exhibits focus on furniture and decorative art. There’s an informative introductory talk (usually weekdays at 2.30pm), plus a tearoom, craft shop and gardens. Parking is available; alternatively, you can walk from Bowness in about 25 minutes (although along a busy road).
